Of course, the Filipinos knows about the Spanish tyranny, but the fact that an upper class Filipino rebelled and wrote about it gave them pride. He became the voice of those who could not speak for themselves. He gave faces to the poor and outcasts. It took guts to defy the Spanish rule, not to mention he took risks and died for his belief. Through him the Spanish met their match.
